Graduation Requirements:

To graduate as a CALS Honors Scholar, students must complete each of the five experiences listed below and maintain an upper division GPA (last 60 hours) of at least 3.75.

  1. Honors Orientation (1 credit)
  2. Honors Colloquium (3 credits)
  3. Honors Project (3 credits). In each department, there is a course numbered xxx 4909; register for this during the semester that you are performing or writing your honors project.
  4. Two to three credits of additional Honors course work; see the Courses page for more information
  5. Write a project report or Honors Thesis

Honors course work is identified as such on your transcript, and you will receive a medallion and a certificate suitable for framing recognizing you as a CALS Honors Scholar.

Latin Honors:

You do not have to participate in the CALS Honors Program to graduate from the University of Florida with Latin Honors. Graduating with Latin Honors from UF requires only the following:

  • cum laude (with honors) - a 3.5 minimum GPA in upper division courses
  • magna cum laude (with high honors) - a 3.75 minimum GPA in upper division courses PLUS an Honors Thesis
  • summa cum laude (with highest honors) - a 3.85 minimum GPA in upper division courses PLUS an Honors Thesis

However, students that complete the CALS Honors Program will graduate from UF with magna cum laude or summa cum laude Latin Honors automatically, since the CALS program requirements are aligned with UF Honors graduation requirements.

See the UF Honors web site for more details on Latin Honors and honors theses at the University of Florida.

Special note for Microbiology and Cell Science students: your department has special course requirements to receive magna or summa cum laude Honors (in addition to the thesis and GPA requirements noted above). Please see the Microbiology and Cell Science Department web site.

Probation Policy:

Students whose upper division GPA falls below 3.50 (or 3.50 for those entering the program before Fall 2006) will be placed on probation. Students on probation must bring their GPA above the applicable threshold by the end of the following semester (not including summer) or they will be dropped from the program. Students on probation cannot be registered for ALS 4921, Honors Colloquium.
