CALS Honors Program
Effective May 5, 2008, the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences Upper Division Honors Program will require an honors thesis. This change is for students admitted to the program on/after May 5, 2008. We are currently working on updating the website to reflect this change. Thanks for your patience.
The CALS Honors Program is the only upper division Honors program at the University of Florida. It is for students who have:
- declared a major and have completed at least one semester in the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences,
- accumulated between 60 and 90 credits
- a 3.75 or greater overall GPA
CALS Honors course work integrates with required and elective courses in your major. To graduate as a CALS Honors Scholar, students must complete each of the five experiences lised below and maintain an upper division GPA of at least a 3.75. All participants must complete these five experiences: ALS 4921 (Honors Colloquium - 3 Credits); ALS 4932 (Honors Orientation - 1 Credit); XXX 4909 (Honors Project 3 Credits); 2 - 3 credits of additional Honors course work - see the Honors courses webpage for futher details; Write a project report or Honors Thesis.
CALS Honors students qualify for scholarships such as those available through the University Scholars Program or the Gainesville Rotary.
CALS Honors coursework is identified as such on the transcript. Students that successfully complete the CALS Honors Program are designated as CALS Honors Scholars, and receive a Scholars Medallion and a certificate suitable for framing.
Students in the program who have the necessary GPA and a desire to graduate magna cum laude or summa cum laude must complete an Honors Thesis. They must also contact the CALS Dean's Office for deadline information and paperwork. Thesis projects are scholarly activities in teaching, research, or extension that involve guided independent work by the student that has clear objectives and expected outcomes.
