Amazon River in Brazil

This is an opportunity of a lifetime to become completely immersed in Brazilian culture and the Amazon rainforest ecosystem, while receiving financial support to pay your expenses! You must be proficient in Portuguese to participate, and upon return you can obtain a Certificate of Proficiency in Portuguese from UF to add to your list of credentials. CALS faculty have been awarded major grants from the Department of Education to support four programs in Brazil:

1. Rainforest Ecosystem Services

You will take courses at the Universidade Federal do Vicosa, Tocantins, or Parana, studying forest ecosystem services in the Amazon. Contact Dr. Nick Comerford or Walter Bowen for more detail.

2. Energy, Environment, and Sustainable Development

You will take courses at the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro or UF Amazonas (Manaus), studying energy choices and their environmental and economic consequences. Contact Dr. Emilio Bruna or Mark Rieger for more detail (program flyer forthcoming).

3. Climate Impacts on Agricultural and Water Resources

This program is offered at the Universidade Federal Rio Grande do Sul in extreme southern Brazil (temperate climate), and at Universidade Federal Para in northeastern Brazil (tropical climate). Contact Dr. Clyde Fraisse or see the program web site.

Rain Shadow

4. Water Resources and Watershed Management

This program is designed for environmental and water resource engineering students. You will take courses at the Universidade Federal do Espirito Santo (Vitoria) or UF Santa Maria (Rio Grande do Sul), studying sustainable watershed and water resource management.
