Ag Cooperative Development International/Volunteers Overseas Cooperative Assistance

(ACDI/VOCA)

  • ACDI/VOCA has extensive experience in placing interns internationally to work in economic development
  • Internships are paid (see site for detail)
  • Internships are up to 3 months during summer
  • Programs include agribusiness, enterprise development, financial services and community development

APHIS Claudia Cartwright Fellowship

  • APHIS - the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, Safegaurds US agriculture by working in foreign countries to stop importation of exotic pests and diseases prior to importation
  • Pays up to $25,000 annually for MS or PhD students
  • Provides paid employment during summers and possible permanent employment upon graduation
  • requires 640 hrs/yr of study-related work
Boren Awards for International Study multiple
  • These awards place students in countries "critical to US interests" and emphasize language training in geographic areas of importance.
  • Scholarships (undergrad) pay up to $20,000 for a full academic year, and fellowships (grad) up to $30,000 for language study and international research. Highly competitive.
Children Beyond Our Borders developing countries
  • This is a volunteer organization that does srveice work in developing countries, particularly Lation America.
  • The focus is education
Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange for Young Professionals Germany
  • full-year scholarships including round-trip airfare, tuition, langauge training, living stipend, in-country travel, and health insurance
  • one semester study at a German University
  • Five-month internship in a german work environment
  • Accomodations in a german home or student residence
  • must be US citizen 18-24 yrs old
Global Service Corps multiple, but specialize in Cambodia, Thailand, and Tanzania
  • The GSC coordinates volunteer internship programs from 4-13 weeks in sustainable agriculture, HIV/AIDS prevention and eductiation, and conversational English
  • you must pay to participate - from about $2800 to over $6000 depending on location and length of stay.
Peace Corps - UF multiple
  • Far more than an internship or work experience, service generally requires a degree and two years commitment.
  • UF has a recruiter at the HUB who can give advice on positioning yourself for the best opportunities
  • Pays a living wage for service and a transition stipend for returning volunteers.
US State Department Internships multiple
  • Internships are mostly unpaid, but available at embassies and other State Dept posts worldwide. They arrange no-cost housing in most cases.
  • Programs are very broad in scope, not specific to areas of agricultural and life sciences
  • a great resume builder for those wishing to work in foreign affairs

Virgin Islands Sustainable Farm Institute St Croix, USVI
  • The VISFI offers several internship and apprenticeship programs on agroforestry, agroecology, and permaculture.
  • These are unpaid internships, but room and board are included in exchange for 30 hrs/week or more work.
  • The University of Georgia offers a 2-week study abroad program at VISFI, "Agroforestry in the Caribbean" (3 credits) available to students at UF; see www.uga.edu/ecocarib.
